REGAS AIR CONDITIONING AT AUTOPFECT

Re-gas, service and repair – what we do

  • We can help whether your air con:
  • Isn’t getting cold enough
  • Smells musty or damp
  • Mists up the windows
  • Has stopped working completely

Our typical air conditioning service can include:

  • System re-gas with the correct refrigerant
  • Vacuum and leak checks
  • Pollen (cabin) filter check
  • Anti-bacterial / anti-fungal treatment
  • Visual inspection of pipes, hoses, compressor and drive belt

We’ll always confirm what’s needed and agree costs with you before we start.

Understanding the two different AC gases

Modern vehicles use one of two main types of air conditioning gas (refrigerant). Most customers think of them as the “old gas” and the “new gas”, but there isn’t a single cut‑off year when manufacturers switched—it varies by make and model.
Here’s how we handle it:

  • We don’t guess—we check the vehicle plate Every vehicle has a metal plate in the engine bay that clearly states which gas it requires. We use this to confirm the correct refrigerant, and we’re happy to show it to you so you can see for yourself.
  • The gases cannot be mixed The two refrigerants are not compatible. Mixing them can damage the system and equipment, so we treat them completely separately.
  • Separate machines, separate fittings We run two different AC machines, each dedicated to one gas type. The fittings are different, which means it’s physically impossible for us to connect the wrong machine to your car.
  • If you don’t know which gas you need That’s normal—most people don’t.
    When you book or call:
We can give you both prices (for the “old” and “new” gas).
Once the vehicle is on site, we inspect the plate, confirm the correct gas type and the exact quantity required.
Only then do we proceed, so you know you’re getting the right service at the right price.

This approach keeps your system safe, protects our equipment, and gives you complete clarity on what’s being done

How often should you re-gas your air con?

Most manufacturers recommend an air conditioning service or re-gas every 1–2 years. Over time, systems naturally lose refrigerant—often around 100 grams per year—which reduces cooling performance and can make the compressor work harder.
Some vehicles can go longer without a re-gas, but if you notice:

  • Warm air instead of cold
  • Slow cooling
  • A noisy or constantly running compressor

…it’s usually time to get the system checked.

Anti-fungal and anti-bacterial treatment

When your air con is running, moisture and microorganisms can build up in the system. This can lead to:

  • Bad odours (damp, musty smells)
  • Coughing or sneezing
  • Watery or irritated eyes

Our anti-fungal disinfection treatment:

  • Cleans and disinfects the air conditioning system
  • Kills bacteria and fungus in the evaporator and ducts
  • Applies a protective layer to help prevent the problem returning

If your air con smells unpleasant when you first switch it on, this treatment is often the solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

The process takes about 45 minutes to completely remove the old gas and refill with fresh refrigerant.

Most vehicle manufacturers recommend that you service or regas your car’s air conditioning system every 1-2 years. There are some vehicles with air con units that can go for more than five years without needing to be regassed.
